Shape of Stone
Shape of Stone | Mokuhanga Print
This work captures the fluidity and movement inherent in stone, an element often perceived as static and unyielding. Through the multilayered technique of mokuhanga printing, the piece evokes the visual sensation of stone flowing like water, revealing its dynamic and ever-changing nature. The entire composition is formed by combining multiple identical prints, emphasizing repetition and subtle variations to mirror the poetic essence of scholar’s stones (gongshi). In Chinese tradition, these revered stones are not merely objects of admiration but embodiments of natural transformation, shaped by wind, water, and time. Shape of Stone presents an alternative perspective—one that highlights the softness within the hard, the fluidity within the solid, much like a poem capturing the silent yet profound passage of time.
